HARANA- Davao’s Definition of Best Restaurant

Uso pa ba ang HARANA?...... (to the tune of Parokya ni Edgar’s song HARANA)

HARANA, in English means SERENADE, it is when you sing a love song to offer to the one you love. But here in Davao City, the meaning of Harana goes beyond the conventional act of courtship because one of the best restaurants here in Davao City is named after this word.

Harana probably is one of the oldest restaurants here in Davao City. I used to wonder why it remains to be one of the best restaurants here in Davao City, but after I tried their sea foods, I think I know the reason why.
Here are some of the BESTS that Harana Restaurant could offer:

1. Best Foods

I bet the primary reason why Harana stayed this long in the Food business industry is because of the delectable foods they offer especially sea foods. I can excuse them for the beverages and the desert, but I think this is where you really can find the best sea foods and steaks here in Davao City.

They have Grilled Pusit:

Grilled Panga:

Shrimp Sinigang:

And a lot more:

Aside from seafoods, they also offer the following:

Pork dishes:

And my favorite Mongolian Beef Steak:

And More:

And I doubt if you won’t drool on those foods.

2. Best Place to Dine In

Since they have the best food, it follows that Harana could also be a good place to dine in.

If you have visitors from other places, you can bring them at Harana and let them experience Davao’s best:

Or if you are new here and looking for the best restaurant here in Davao City, I suggest Harana:

3. Best Reception for an event

If you have future events like birthday, anniversary or wedding perhaps, Harana has a wide area to accommodate all your visitors.

You can visit Harana Restaurant along F. Torres St., Davao City

So if you are going to ask me again, "Uso pa ba ang Harana?", I should say: "Usong-uso!!!!"

Scary Halloween Costumes Ever

As Halloween is fast approaching, I am sure Halloween-themed parties are happening everywhere. This is a kind of party where you don’t need to be gorgeous and handsome because this is not a party for good looking people, this is a party for those who can project the scariest and the ugliest and the yuckiest face in the crowd. If you have the most dilapidated and awkward face, you will surely stand out at the Halloween party.

Since we are after the scariest figure in the crowd, your hope to stand out in a Halloween Party relies on the costume. Wear a powerful costume and win the charm of the crowd by wearing the most awesome but scariest costume.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Man in the Coffin costume

How would you like to appear in the crowd in a coffin costume?

There’s something eerie about coffins that would make it more appealing in the Halloween party. A coffin in the party? How would you like that huh? But the downside of wearing this huge costume is that, you can’t just simply walk in the middle of the crowd while inside the fake coffin. You need some volunteers to carry your coffin for you to make it more realistic.

2. Wear a Wrecked Face

One of the scariest costumes in the Halloween party is the wrecked-face man.

You can appear bloody and ugly, or somebody with awkward face. This one requires a lot of cosmetics and make ups and a great talent to paint a wrecked face over a not so handsome face. And I am sure it is not easy to wear this kind of make up for the whole duration of the party, but it’s worth the scare.

3. Preggy woman

If you are a pregnant woman and you want to bring your fetus to the trick or treat, you can appear scary by using your bulky womb. Try this costume I found online for pregnant women.

Imagine baby’s hands coming out of the mother’s womb. Bloody and scary.

So there, I think you can scare a whole lot of children and by passers with those Halloween costumes I mentioned. Nevertheless, win or loss, what matters most is that you enjoyed the party and the SPIRITS.

Food Tripping and Bar Hopping at Calle 5 and Calle Inasal in Kalye Bajada, Davao City

Presenting the new Calle 5 and Calle Inasal.

Calle 5 is now located at JP Laurel, Bajada street, Davao City. I think this is a perfect location for businesses like Calle Inasal because this is more accessible to people.

Calle 5 has an area for Coffee shop. This is for those who want to relax and to talk over a cup of coffee. Whether you want to cheers a coffee or a wine, this is a perfect place for you.

Right next to the mini coffee shop is a mini bar. This is where mini concerts and and mini events happen. For those who have high tolerance with alcohol and would like to party all night with music and beers, this is your place.

For hungry stomachs and food adventurers, Calle Inasal is located next to the mini bar. We tried their Chicken a la King. For a cheap price of 65 pesos, you will get to taste their chicken specialties like garlic fried chicken. There are only few selections on the menu though but it’s worth a try.

Here's my rating:

Location: 9/10
Ambiance: 7.5/10
Service: 10/10
Food: 7/10

Meldy Delos Santos for Monster Scholar Second Sem SY 2012-2013

Help will always come to those who need and deserve it.

Sometimes, we need to exert extra effort and a little bit of perseverance to get the help that we needed.

This blogpost is dedicated to Meldy Delos Santos, an aspiring graduating student, hoping and praying
to become a Monster Scholar of RX 93.1.

I would like to channel her story in this blogpost through her best friend, Angela.

I am Angela (ok fine Angel  Rhayne LOL) , an avid listener of Monster Radio RX 93.1 applying for Monster Scholar for School Year 2012-2013 Second semester for my Best Friend Meldy Delos Santos (24y.o.). I am hoping you would give me a chance to help my Best Friend. I don’t know how to tell her story, so I will just try to tell her story based on what she told me, and based on what I know.

We’ve been best friends since Freshmen in high school. I met her when I got transferred to Dumarao National High School back in 2001. She was a Valedictorian in Elementary. She has 1 younger sibling and from a broken family. They aren’t receiving any help from her father and their only source of income is her mother’s small business which is selling Bananas and Dried Fish. Their income is so little and often just enough for food. They don’t even have electricity at home (Until now, especially in the province, it really cost to have electricity connected).  At that time her sister has just been born. She then knows that they need to prioritize her sister’s needs because she is still an infant then. As the Eldest Child, she knows she needs to help, so she promised herself that she will do everything to help her Family. And pursuing her education was her first step. By 3rd year high school she already started to work part time with her aunt in Ilo-ilo just so she can continue her studies. She was able to continue her studies until 1st year college. Unfortunately her aunt got really ill and can no longer help her in her studies. Another relative again offered her help; Her aunt (her mother’s cousin) who has a small Service Center Business in Manila. The setup is; Her Tuition fee is her Salary. For Example 6000 fee = 2 months salary (3k/month). She accepted the offer because she really wanted to finish her studies and send help to her family. That’s when she went here in Manila. She worked for her aunt as a house helper/secretary for a year before they enrolled back her to college. It took so long because her aunt’s husband doesn’t approve of sending her to school. They kept on arguing about Meldy but in the end her aunt still enrolled her to college. She took Business Admin at New Era University. But since she was a transferee she then became an irregular student. As hard working and as a determined person as she is; she tried to work the schedule and tasks. From housekeeping to working at the office to going to school. Her Uncle still do not approve the setup. They continued arguing about it and about helping Meldy the whole time. After a total of 7 years in college finally there’s only few units left and then she can graduate. The problem was she would need to take a couple of courses ahead before she can take the rest. She talked to her aunt about it and she asks if she can enroll this summer  (Last summer 2012)to get a couple of course (She don’t normally enroll on class during summer). Her Aunt agreed for her to enroll so she can take the rest of the courses for the first semester 2012 and then she can Graduate by October 2012. But the inevitable issue came to life again with her aunt’s husband disapproval of her going for a summer class. Her aunt tried to fight for Meldy and things got pretty serious to the point that they were really fighting. Meldy can’t stand to see her aunt being hurt and she then realized she doesn’t want to be the reason of their fight anymore. So after that serious scene she got to talk to her aunt. She told her that as much as she wanted to finish her studies she also can no longer take it seeing her aunt being hurt every time they fight. She told her aunt that she will try her luck and look for a job and a place to stay. Just so they stop fighting. She assured her aunt that she can contact her whenever they need her help. Her aunt agreed.

That’s when Meldy contacted me and asked for my Help. She told me the story and asked if she can stay in my place for a while. I told her its ok for her to stay. I asked what her plan is and she told me she wanted to look for a job first so she can help with the expenses and save money for her studies. I referred her then to a small time Outsource company I know who accepts beginners. It is a small time Call Center so to speak the only difference is the pay is too low and they have no benefits offered. But since she doesn’t have call center experience yet and she needs to have a job as soon as possible; so she applied there. She is working there till now both to get experience and to support her everyday living expenses and to save for her schooling. But I know myself that her salary is not enough. She still sends some money to help her family in Dumarao Capiz which is understandable. That’s what makes me decide to ask help on behalf of her. I saw where she is coming from. I can really relate to what she is going through right to because I’ve been there. I actually am there.

Some people say that you don’t need a diploma to get a job. Maybe, but if you are aiming for success and if you aim not just to help yourself but also help your starving family, of course you would want to aim for a better job. A job that can be able to support you and your family. And as an undergraduate its really hard to look for that kind of job. There’s a lot of competition and discrimination around. Me, I needed to stop my studies in college, that’s almost 6 years ago. I still want to continue my studies even if I stopped for that long because I still aim for a better life for me and my family. I also hope someday to wear that toga and get that diploma, you know. That’s why I really understand where she is coming from. I don’t know how to really say it. Imagine, just few units and she’s gonna be there graduating accepting her diploma and using it as a key for brighter future. In tagalog “konting konti nalang mararating na nya yung tagumpay”.As her best friend I don’t want to see us both stuck in where we are right now. I really want to help her and this is the least thing that I can do. She is not just a Best Friend to me, she is like a sister and even a mirror sometimes. Im sorry if this went like a roller coaster. I just really don’t know how this goes. I hope you can help me help her. I hope you can give her a chance. She have been struggling to finish her college for 7 years now. 7 years she didn’t give up on finding ways. And still she is not giving up. I know, I can feel it. I can see it in her. Her story and her struggle is very inspiring even to me. I am confident that she is deserving of your help. Thank you for reading this and thank you  in advance for  giving her a chance.

Do You Believe in Tiktik? The Myths of Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles

If there’s a breed of Aswang that has been left out for generation, I may say it’s a Tiktik. Yes we heard about Manananggal, Vampires, zombies and other groups of Aswang in the mainstream, but Tiktik, I don’t think people from Luzon area, especially the new generation know about Tiktik.

Tiktik is different among any other groups of Aswang because this is more famous in the Visayas-Mindanao area. I may say, this is our own version of Aswang. Tiktik is no longer an underground name nowadays especially now that they made a movie about it starring Dingdong Dantes.

The name Tiktik is derived from the eerie sound of a bird, a different kind of bird, something sinister and creepy. I have my own accounts about Tiktik based on the stories shared to me by relatives and those who encountered it. But in the movie Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles, I have noted some beliefs and myths about Tiktik which I dare to agree based on the stories from old folks.

1. When you hear the Tiktik sound, the fainter it is, the closer

This is something I really could not forget about Tiktik. If you hear the sound “tik..tik..tik..tik….”, it’s not a bird, it’s not a lizard, it’s a Tiktik. You have to listen carefully, if it’s too loud, do not panic, that means the devourer is far from your location. But if it is too faint that you can hardly hear it, it’s time to pack up and prepare your best defense, they are just a few meters away from you, or maybe inches.

2. They are not afraid of BAWANG, they just can’t stand the smell of it

If you think Tiktik are afraid of bawang, you are wrong, they just can’t stand the smell of it. Tiktik sense of smell is very sensitive that they can’t just take smelling the odor of the garlic.

3. They can be killed by Buntot Pagi

You can use a sword, you can use a salt, you can use a knife or a gun, but the best and the most effective defense against tiktik is BUNTOT PAGI. Every whip of this fatal weapon is dangerous to every living Tiktik in the world.

Tiktik are always after pregnant women, because for them, unborn babies are the best food ever. So next time you encountered a Tiktik, you know the sign and you know how to defeat them.

A Letter from a Wallflower (Quotable Quotes from The Perks of Being a Wallflower- A novel by Stephen Chbosky)

October 6, 2012

Dear Friend,

So I’ve read this book called “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” because I found out that there is a movie adaptation of this book starring my favorite Emma Watson. Forgive me if I can’t outgrow her Hermione Granger character in Harry Potter, but I don't think I want to see her portraying a different role. But I want to try so that I would love her more as Emma Watson and not as Hermione Granger because that one is a thing in the past.

Anyways, I heard she played the role of Sam, the love interest of Charlie which is the main character in the story. I read it and I couldn’t imagine Emma Watson on Sam’s role. She’s a little bit bitchy (Forgive me for the term) and liberated, but knowing Emma as a talented and versatile actress, I know she can give justice to the character, I just don’t know how.

Yesterday, I’ve checked movie houses so I can watch the movie version since I finished reading the book. I don’t have any high expectations with the movie version because as always, the book is better than the movie, but I always love to see the characters moving, so for the sake of knowing how the story looks like in the movie, I went to see it in the theatre. But much to my dismay when I found out that it is not available anymore. A new movie has replaced it’s slot. Maybe I can just watch  “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” online or just download it online. I hope I can find a pirated copy of this movie online since I failed to catch it in the cinema.

I can tell you I can somehow relate to Charlie’s character. Actually, I am a wallflower. There is this “Charlie-ish” part of me which I can’t get out of my system. I am the one who prefers to sit in the corner and observe and think and sometimes talk to myself. I choose not to participate. But that doesn’t mean I am a loner. I guess we should draw a thick line between a loner and a wallflower. But there are a lot of perks for being a wallflower. Unless you are a wallflower, you wouldn’t know that, and if you really want to know, go read this book or watch the movie.

I don’t want to go into details, I just want to share to you quotable quotes from this novel which somehow created an impact to me as a person, as a friend, as a family and as a wallflower.

Quote Number 1:

“Well, there are rules you follow here not because you want to, but because you have to. You get it?"
- Patrick

Quote Number 2:

“The thing is some girls think they can actually change guys. And what’s funny is that if they actually did change them, they’d get bored. They’d have no challenge left. You just have to give girls some time to think of a new way of doing things, that’s all. Some of them will figure it out here. Some later. Some never. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.”

Quote Number 3:

“Charlie, we accept the love we think we deserve.”

Quote Number 4:

“Not everyone has a sob story, Charlie, and even if they do, it’s no excuse.”
-Charlie's dad

Quote Number 5:

“I feel infinite”

Quote Number 6:

“I’m thankful that my brother played football on television so nobody fought.”

Quote Number 7:

“I want to make sure that the first person you kiss loves you. Okay?”

Quote number 8:

“The problem with things is that everyone is always comparing everyone with everyone and because of that, it discredits people”

Quote Number 9:

“The best thing to do when you don’t know what to do during anything sexual is pay attention to how that person is kissing you and kiss them back the same way.”

Quote Number 10:

“I want you to stop smoking, you hear? Because I really do love you”
-Charlie's sister

Quote Number 11:

“I know I’m your old man, but…you can’t be too careful these days, and wear protection,  and if she says no, then you have to assume she means it…because if you force her to do something she doesn’t want to do, then you’re in big trouble, mister …and even if she says no, and really means yes, then quite frankly she’s playing games and isn’t worth the price of dinner.”
-Charlie's Father

Quote Number 12:

“You know, Patrick? If I were gay, I’d want to date you.”

Quote Number 13:

“Very easy to read, but very hard to read well.”

Quote Number 14:

“If you ever do this again, I’ll tell everyone. And if that doesn’t work, I’ll blind you.”

Quote Number 15:

“Charlie, you’re so stupid sometimes.”

Quote Number 16:

“You ever think, Charlie, that our group is the same as any other group like the football team? And the only real difference between us is what we wear and why we wear it?”

Quote Number 17:

“Be skeptical about this one. It’s a great book. But try to be a filter, not a sponge.”

Quote Number 18:

“Do you know that? Charlie, you’re one of the most gifted people I’ve ever known. And I don’t mean in terms of my other students. I mean in terms of anyone I’ve ever met. That’s why I gave you the extra work. I was wondering if you were aware of that?”

Quote Number 19:

“Any press is good press.”
-Charlies Father

Quote Number 19:

“I thought that your being sad was much more important to me than Craig not being your boyfriend anymore. And if it meant that I would never get to think of you that way, as long as you were happy, it was okay. That’s when I realized that I really loved you.”

Quote Number 20:

“It’s great that you can listen and be a shoulder to someone, but what about when someone doesn’t need a shoulder. What if they need the arms or something like that? You can’t just sit there and put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love. You just can’t. You have to do things”

Quote Number 21:

“At those times, you weren’t being his friend at all. Because you weren’t honest with him.”

Quote Number 22:

“It’s just that I don’t want to be somebody’s crush. If somebody likes me, I want them to like the real me, not what they think I am. And I don’t want them to carry it around inside. I want them to show me, so I can feel it, too. I want them to be able to do whatever they want around me. And if they do something I don’t like, I’ll tell them.”

Quote Number 23:

“So, I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them. “

Quote Number 24:

“Maybe it’s good to put things in perspective, but sometimes, I think that the only perspective is to really be there. “

Whoaaa. Those 24 quotes I shared above are really good right? I hope you do enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it. But wait, I want to share to you a poem written by unknown author that has been included in the story. Charlie read this in their Christmass party and everyone went speechless when they heard this poem. It goes like this:

Once on a yellow piece of paper with green lines he wrote a poem
And he called it “Chops” because that was the name of his dog
And that’s what it was all about And his teacher gave him an A and a gold star
And his mother hung it on the kitchen door and read it to his aunts
That was the year Father Tracy took all the kids to the zoo
And he let them sing on the bus
And his little sister was born with tiny toenails and no hair
And his mother and father kissed a lot
And the girl around the corner sent him a Valentine signed with a row of X’s
and he had to ask his father what the X’s meant
And his father always tucked him in bed at night
And was always there to do it

Once on a piece of white paper with blue lines he wrote a poem
And he called it “Autumn” because that was the name of the season
And that’s what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and asked him to write more clearly
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door because of its new paint
And the kids told him that Father Tracy smoked cigars
And left butts on the pews
And sometimes they would burn holes
That was the year his sister got glasses with thick lenses and black frames
And the girl around the corner laughed when he asked her to go see Santa Claus
And the kids told him why his mother and father kissed a lot
And his father never tucked him in bed at night
And his father got mad when he cried for him to do it.

Once on a paper torn from his notebook he wrote a poem
And he called it “Innocence: A Question” because that was the question about his girl
And that’s what it was all about
And his professor gave him an A and a strange steady look
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door because he never showed her
That was the year that Father Tracy died
And he forgot how the end of the Apostle’s Creed went
And he caught his sister making out on the back porch
And his mother and father never kissed or even talked
And the girl around the corner wore too much makeup
That made him cough when he kissed her but he kissed her anyway because that was the thing to do
And at three A.M. he tucked himself into bed his father snoring soundly
That’s why on the back of a brown paper bag

He tried another poem
And he called it “Absolutely Nothing” Because that’s what it was really all about
And he gave himself an A and a slash on each damned wrist
And he hung it on the bathroom door because this time he didn’t think he could reach the kitchen.

If you think the poem is a suicide note, you are right.

I guess I have to end this letter now, I need to prepare and go to work, and I don’t know if I will write you letter again. Maybe someday. But for now, bye bye.

Somehow, I am INFINITE.
                Love Always,

Some Scenarios That Violate Republic Act No. 10175 or Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012

In this digital age, the use of Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter is very rampant. It even played a vital role when it comes to communication. But internet could almost play anything including a medium of ranting, bragging and even bullying. Therefore, our respective lawmakers have decided to come up with the law that would protect us from trolls and cyber bullies. And so the birth of Republic Act No. 10175 or known as The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Because of this so called Cybercrime Law, we are now protected against anybody who would do us wrong through Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and in any digital means. Hurray for that!!!

But wait!!! This law could also take away the freedom to say what we really want. If Liking, reposting, retweeting and posting negative comments could lead us to jail, then how can we suppose to say what we want? Isn’t this suppressing our freedom of speech and expression?

If you can’t get what I mean, here are some scenarios that would violate Cybercrime law:

1. If for example you saw a traffic law officer  making “kotong” to some traffic violators, you took a photo or any evidences about the scene and posted in Facebook or in  Twitter and said:

Traffic Officer████████████████████ caught in the act ████████████████████- forcing Mr. ████████████████████ to pay for████████████████████-…. Blah blah blah…. See photo below:

████████████████████. [Photo ʙʟᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ.] (ʀᴀ ɴᴏ. 10175)

By posting the message above, you can be penalized for libel. Whether what you are posting is real or imaginary, as long as you are  posting about malicious imputation of a crime, vice or defect, you are guilty. So if you are just a mere citizen of the Philippines and you want to share information about somebody’s crime on Facebook because this is where you think you can freely voice out your point, you can be put to jail because of the Cybercrime law. Take note, it doesn’t matter if it is REAL or IMAGINARY, as long as you are saying something bad about somebody on your post, you go to jail.

2. Now, if the person who posted the message in Scenario number 1 is your friend, then you click the Like, Retweet, Repost or Share button, you are now considered an accomplice. Anybody involve in spreading the bad information about somebody is considered a criminal. So from now on, be careful with what you LIKE, RETWEET or SHARE because you can be put to jail by just doing that.

3. If you are witty and sarcastic, I suggest you stop posting on Social Media now. So if you posted something like:

Wow, the████████████████████ Law is very ████████████████████  I like it. I love it.. Congratulations to Senator ████████████████████ for passing the law and to ████████████████████ and ████████████████████ and ████████████████████ and the rest of the ████████████████████ for approving it. And of course, to our dear ████████████████████ who signed it. We are now tongue tied.

We know that the person who posted it is not really thankful. It’s sarcastic. He, including the people who will like, share and repost it, are all guilty. Calling name names is also included here. There should be no more "noynoying" or "SottoCopy" or whatever name calling that would insult people.

4. Review your previous posts. Make sure that you delete all previous comments because that too can be used against you. It’s like a ghost from the past. Eventhough the law has just been passed and approved, your previous bad posts and comments can be an evidence against you. Under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, the "victims" and their lawyers "could use your old post to argue in court and you will be charged with online libel.

5. Scenario number 5 is just the same as in Scenario number 1, but this time, you are talking bad about the dead person. So if you say:

Good thing that Mr ████████████████████ died already. When he was still alive, he facilitated ████████████████████ and ████████████████████ an all the drug lords ████████████████████ and ████████████████████████████████████████you Mr ----████████████████████, Go to████████████████████-.

If you are loathing against somebody who is dead, better burry it with him and do not post your sentiments on Facebook because it is against the Cybercrime Law.

What if I am guilty of one of the scenarios above? What is the penalty? Oh well, a maximum of 12 years in prison and a fine of maximum of P1,000,000.

All I can is, be careful. Social Media is not the same hideout anymore where we can brag, we can rant and we can say what we want. The Cybercrime Law is just like telling us that if we have nothing good to say about, you better shut up.
